PKO PROCESS · PHASE 03 · KERNEL / SHELL SEPARATION
Kernel recovery.
Nut cracking separates kernel from shell.
After the press cake is depericarped, palm nuts move into the nut-recovery line. The nuts are cracked and the lighter shell fragments are separated from the denser palm kernels using the mill's configured dry or wet separation system.
This is the point where two distinct commercial streams are formed: palm kernel, which can move onward to kernel crushing for PKO production, and palm kernel shell (PKS), which follows its own screening, stockpiling and biomass-fuel route.
NUT CRACKINGRecovered nuts are cracked to release kernel and shell components.
SEPARATIONKernel and shell are segregated so each stream can be controlled and handled independently.
DOWNSTREAMKernel continues toward PKO production; shell moves into the PKS biomass chain.

Mill-side kernel and shell recovery visual — shell is separated from the kernel stream before each moves to its own downstream route.
